Messages from Former Staffers to Current Staffers

Marci Harris, 2007-2010: We walked the same halls, sat at the same desks, undertook many of the same tasks but never imagined that what occurred on Jan 6 was possible. We are sickened that a historic building and symbol of democracy was desecrated. We are outraged and heartbroken that you were terrorized in your workplace. We know that staffers stay out of the spotlight. You whisper your advice. You write the words that others speak. You hold the phone and sort the mail and listen to the stories and follow up on the cases. We know that you are the heart and soul of the People's House. A community of staffers who came before stand with you. And we sincerely thank you for your service.

Keenan Austin Reed, 2011-2020: To my beloved hill family, we know that being a public servant particularly a hill staffer is a selfless act. We put our needs after our bosses, the constituents and the guests. We miss big family events, holidays and happy hours to serve our country. This time put YOU first. This is not normal and we are not ok.

Tom Manatos, 2002-2011: THANK YOU! Thank you to the ones sweeping up the glass and patching the holes, to the ones working on the front lines to protect the institution from further harm, and to the ones ensuring our Congress keeps running. The work that you do keeps our democracy intact. We are here for you, never hesitate to ask for help.

Travis Moore, 2009 - 2015: You sign up for this— and take on the long hours and low pay and constant stress— because you believe in something bigger than yourself. Most days it’s a thankless job. Some days are worse, being on the end of an angry call or hallway encounter. But the country needs you. Now more than ever. Hill staff remain the smartest, hardest working collection of individuals I’ve encountered. We appreciate the sacrifices you are making. We are thinking of you. Keep your head up.

Kristin Nicholson, 1996-2017: Thank you. The work you do is so important, and rarely have you been asked to perform it under circumstances as difficult as these. Please know that we are here to support you, to amplify your needs and concerns, and to ensure that your fellow citizens recognize your contribution to our country. We stand with you, always.

Kathy Goldschmidt, 1995-1997: Though I worked on the Hill for a short time, I have dedicated my career to Congress and congressional staff through the Congressional Management Foundation. Congress is one of the most challenging and rewarding workplaces anywhere. It is driven by dedicated staffers who willingly sacrifice much. I see you. I feel for you. I am here to help you.

Ryan Bowley, 2003 - 2009: Thank you for your hard work and dedication every day and especially right now. Your commitment to public service is an inspiration to our nation. It - and you - will play a major part in helping us through these difficult times.

Anna Kain, 2013-2015: ‘Thank you’ doesn’t seem adequate in times such as these, but I am so grateful for what you do every single day. Whether you’re a CoS or a Staff Assistant, you are the heart of our government. Our 244-year-old democracy still takes my breath away and it’s because of you. You are patriots, you are heroes, you are essential.

Sonja Ferrell , 1998-2011: You have all been on my heart and mind all week. Staff don’t receive the just attention for their roles in protecting their bosses and our heritage and quite frankly our future. May the memories fade and the resiliency grow as we go through the coming days and weeks.

Susan Hansberger , 2000-2001: The work you are doing is important! We appreciate your dedication and contribution to the betterment of our government and our country.

Kim Alfred, 1998 - 2007: Please know that many of us are thinking of and praying for you. You are certainly not alone or forgotten in these unprecedented times.

Kristen Jarvis West, 2003-2007: Words cannot express how grateful we are to each of you for your tireless effort to make the world a better place. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Thomas McIntyre, 1999-2006: Keep it up. You’re the mantel of democracy. It’s hard but keep us centered! Please

Dakota Jablon, 2010-2011: Thank you for all you every day, but especially now. You are the unsung heroes and the backbone of our democracy. While staffers are far too often taken for granted, please know that there are many of us supporting you and continually singing your praises, especially during these trying times.

Shannon Lane, 1993-1998, 2000-2004: I remember coming to work after the 1998 shooting, 9/11, and during the anthrax crisis. Take care of yourselves and your colleagues, call EAP even if you’re not sure you need it, and remember that the work you do literally changes the world. Thank you.

Chris Vandeventer, 1998-2005, 2018: I’ve been where you are. I survived 9/11 and anthrax. Our values were attacked then just as they are now. Hang in there. Regardless party staffers current and former staffers know we chose this line of work because we love our country and have a desire to be part of something bigger than ourselves. There is no higher calling that that of public service. Thank you for all you do and stay safe.

Laurelie Wallace, 2006-2007: Dear Hill Staff, Thank you for your hard work and dedication to our country. Congress is institution full of history. We are in difficult times but your resilience and passion is admirable. Stay safe and be well.

Mariel Lim, 2007 - 2013: The attack on our nation's Capitol was traumatic, and it is okay to not be okay. Particularly for BIPOC staffers. As former Hill staffers, we support you, we thank you, and we love you. While you may have each other to lean on, please reach out to any of us if you need anything at all. You are appreciated more than you know.

Adriane Casalotti, 2010-2016: For many, the Capitol is a symbol of the ideals of our nation. But it can only live up to those ideals thanks to the tireless work of Congressional staff. Thank you and know that we support you.

Alex Fischer, 1993-2005: Hang in there, keep your heads up and eyes open itll pass

Betsy Umhofer, 1997-2017: I worked with Rep. Walter Capps and Rep. Lois Capps for 20 years. My thoughts and prayers are with you as you try to recover for the assault on the Capitol.

Amy Dudley, 2009-2010; 2013-2017: Ever in awe of your strength, resilience and dedication to public service and upholding our fragile democracy -- but especially over an unprecedented past four years that culminated with an attack on what feels like a second home to all of us, the Capitol. Be kind to yourselves and each other as you heal from the unimaginable terror of that day.

Naomi Seiler, 2003-2010: Thank you for your courage, your persistence, and your work to uphold democracy. You guys are the glue holding together what makes our country what it is. I am so grateful for you.

Alpha Lillstrom, 2007-2013: Congress could not function, succeed, or be the institution of democracy without you and your colleagues. While I'm sure your sense of security has been shattered, please know that there are so many of us who understand and respect what you are facing. I know I am not alone in vowing to support you as well as the stabilization and restoration of our democratic ideals so that all Americans can be proud of their democracy.

Shin Inouye, 2007-2008: Working on the hill often means long hours, demanding deadlines and workloads, and intense political battles. You do it all behind the scenes, and you are the engines that allow your bosses and the Congress to operate. What happened on January 6, 2021 was an attack on our democracy and the Congress itself. Please know we all appreciate you and thank you for all you do.

Victoria Tung, 2003-2009: As a former Hill staffer, I am constantly in awe of the dedication and commitment Hill staffers have to make our country a better place. Thank you for your service! Please know that we are here for you. Please take this time for self-care and healing as that in itself is an act of resistance from the oppression we are facing right now.

Brian Greer, 2006 - 2019: Congressional Staff, we all appreciate your dedication to public service and all that you do in support of our government. You are the guardians of our democracy and are under-appreciated. We are here to support you as you navigate a new Administration and new Congress.

Jonathan Davey, 2003-2009: Thanks for all you are continuing to do - keep the faith and remember why you're there. Everyone on this letter, and countless others, have your back.

Kara Allen, 2008-2014: Once a Hill staffer, always a Hill staffer. We share so much, but, above all, a love for country and a commitment to serve. Thank you for continuing that commitment in the face of such horror. Our nation needs you, especially your belief in something bigger than yourselves, now more than ever. We hope you will carry on knowing you are part of a big family, and we are always here for you.

Isaac Wright, 2005: Thank you for your service to our democracy. Terrorists wouldn't be attacking the Capitol if they weren't afraid of everything democracy can accomplish.

Catherine Fish, 2009 - 2011: Thank you, Hill Staff Family, for your hard work and commitment to our country during these trying times. We are so grateful for you and the critical work that you do everyday to support your members and constituents. Your work is needed today more than ever but it can’t be easy right now. Thinking of you all. Hang in there and be safe.

Ann-Janette Fuentes Twombly, 2001: Thank you for all you do. Your work has always been critical and that is especially true now. These trying times will pass, but please know that we are with you.

Phoebe Sweet, 3.5: You are the real heroes — the ones who make this country run but get little glory. We see you, we respect you, and we support you.

Tim LaPira, 1997-2000, 2019: I have spent my entire adult life either as a staffer or as an academic researching, writing, and teaching about congressional staff. I have made it my career to understand the work you do because it is so important, so critical to our democracy. Your job is extraordinarily challenging even under the best of circumstances. You should be proud of the work you do, especially in the aftermath January 6. I know am. Thank you.

Anne Meeker, 2016-2020: Y'all have to be tough, smart, capable people to do what you do, and it's easy to get so used to taking care of other people you forget to check in with yourself. If you've told a friend, coworker, direct report, or whatever to take the time/get the help they need recently.... remember to take your own advice too :)

David Gilliland, 1989-2001: Hang in there, my former colleagues. We are all thinking about you.

Laura Maristany, 2005-2009: Thank you for continuing to serve on the frontlines of our democracy. Your commitment to our country matters. I also know how hard it can be to stay on the frontlines when everything around you feels like it's doing it's very best to make you run. There are many of us out here who care. Do what you need to do to survive this moment. Thank you for carrying this weight for our country.

Mark Christopher, 2003: We believe in you! If hearing about past scares helps, I interned on the Hill soon after the 9/11 anthrax attacks and was there the day they first distributed gas masks. (I learned that the only thing worse than needing a gas mask because of where you work is learning that there's no mask for you because you're an intern!) Times have been tough before, but you can make it through. Our country needs you.

Linda Mancillas, 2010-2011: I served on the Hill during the healthcare riot and remember how scared I was. Please know that you are very much appreciated and those of us that have been in your shoes--Understand the danger. I am very proud of all of you and know that your service to our country is one of the most important things you can do. My love and concern is with you always. LKM

Harry Baumgarten, 2014-2019: Thank you for all that you do! You get the Members to hearings, draft the legislation, and keep the government running. You may not hear it as often as you should, but thank you for all your hard work, dedication, and sacrifice on behalf of our country.

Laurie A. Watkins, 2007 - 2009 : Sending you strength, courage, hope, freedom, peace, and love. Battle on, Warrior. Stay strong!

Celes Eckerman, 1997 - 2010: I am so sorry that your service to your communities and your country has placed you in the middle of this dark moment for our country. On 6 Jan, I spent the afternoon DMing the two friends I shared a Russell office with on 9/11. We got through that by laughing (and drinking) and crying together - lean on us, lean on your colleagues. We WILL get through this moment, too. xoxo

Mike Carr, 1995 - 1998, 2004 - 2012: Please know many of us out there are feeling the desecration and sense of violation you are feeling. It’s understandable to feel vulnerable. Please know we are with you and know the sacrifices you are making. This will get better. We will make it get better.

Noah Eden, 2012: Thank you for your ongoing, behind the scenes work to keep our legislative branch functioning. Our country is grateful for your resilience and commitment to democracy through these difficult times. Stay strong.

You and your colleagues should continue to strive to make a positive difference in this world, it's so needed. Thank you.

Shannon Burns Bieter, 1993-1995: Please know so many former people who worked on the hill are thinking of you. Thank you for your service and courage.

Todd Curry, 2002, 2005-2007: Working on the Hill was an honor of a lifetime, so I know how special it is to serve. I thought of all of you last week as the horror unfolded. We are so thankful and grateful for your service and our hearts break that you must walk those halls alone, in fear and with pain. But we are all here to shoulder some of that burden – reach out to us. We are in this together.

Meredith MacKenzie, 2008-2011: You make the legislative branch work! To all the comms staff in particular, take Twitter breaks, set a timer if you have to. Focus on the parts of the job that build you up and make you better, and hold your colleagues close. What you learn and the friends you make will be all you take with you when you're done on the Hill.

Gail Wolek, 1981: These are more than jobs. We are called to do this work for the people of the United States. Truth, honor, integrity, and service on behalf of the greater good of our country is your contribution to our democracy. It was my privilege to serve in the U.S. Senate and that experience has informed the rest of my professional career. Stay strong, stay safe, and look after each other.

I want to thank you for all the hard work that you do, and that you continue to do after that horrible day. Thank you to the staffers for keeping up with legislation, the Police Officers for making our second homes save, and the custodial team who had to clean the mess that shouldn't have been there in the first place.

Stephen Ward, 2003-2011: Those of us who served in the halls of Congress share in your grief, your ongoing fears, your sense of loss.... Please know that we are grateful for your service and your willingness to return to the complex to carry on the sacred duties of Congress.

It may seem rough now, but in time it will give you a perspective and insights like no other. Wisdom never comes without some price - but in the long run the rewards will be well worth it. Best wishes.

Michael Lambert, 2015-2017: Focus on the issues you love, and never feel beholden to a member or office. When you are ready to jump then jump.

Ashley R McKeon, 2005-2011, 2015-2019: The work you do is more important now that ever. Do not lose heart. Without staff there would be no democracy. We are here for you!

Jessalyn Schwartz, 2005-2006; 2009-2010: Your resilience and dedication to democracy is clear and former Hill staff are behind you 100%. Once part of the Capitol family, always part of the Capitol family. I miss walking around those hallowed halls and cannot imagine how difficult it was to experience the events of last week.

Josh Ney, 2011-2013: Thank you for your service to our country. Thank you for the long hours and the time away from families and friends and for all you do to ensure your boss can uphold their oath of office. When I was on the Hill, I'd walk the halls of the Capitol as whenever I could and was in awe at how I was walking in the halls of history. And I'm walking with you all today.

Tom Stewart, 2007-2016, 2019-2020: You matter enormously. Be kind to yourself and others. Take breaks. Let it out. Seek whatever help you need. It's ok not to be ok. And remember to listen to and follow your conscience. If you have reservations, if you believe you are tasked with serving a dishonorable cause, you can and should resign. You will get through this. Stay safe and make us proud. We love you.

It's hard, long, often thankless hours for low pay. But know today that you are seen, appreciated, and supported.

Michael Nilsson, 36923: Please know that so many of us who worked on the Hill are thinking of you. We have some small idea of how hard this is. You folks are the best.

Alex Sarnowski, 2009-2016: The hill is one of the most unique working environments in the world. That comes with pluses and minuses- but at least you know you’re doing it in the service of freedom, democracy and our great country. Please don’t forget that during these trying times, you’re the gears that make our representative democracy work, and despite what it feels like now, you’ll look back upon your service on the Hill with pride

Alec Buckley, 2015-2019: First, I just want to say thank you for your service, keeping the country running during a deadly pandemic. From the staffers, to the lovely folks at Cups, and the Capitol Police that put themselves in harms way to protect our democracy and our congressional leaders. It's disgusting that any of you had to endure this. It is my hope that this never happens again. Again, thank you. Never give up. .

Marne Marotta, 2010-2017: Thank you! You are the gears that make Congress go. I cannot imagine how difficult it was to get up on Jan. 7, but know that your dedication and perseverance matter. Your ability to continue working will help our democracy survive these unprecedented times. And I appreciate you.

Adena Leibman, 2009-2010, 2015-2019: Life as a Hill staffer is full of ups and downs - it's a rollercoaster of highs and lows in the pursuit of making a better, stronger America. The events of January 6 took that rollercoaster completely off the rails. There is no excuse. Thank you to the staff and protectors of the Capitol who keep the ship of democracy afloat. Know your work is important and your dedication does not go unnoticed. Please stay safe.

Veronica Bonilla, 2016-2019: Enough cannot be said for your resilience, strength, and dedication. Chen-Lun Chang, 2008: I cannot imagine what you must have gone through, what you felt or experienced that day. My thoughts are with you as you work through your lingering emotions. Know that what you do makes a difference in the country that we all love. We will be better off because of your resolve to do the work of a nation. My best wishes to you all.

Ben Barasky, 2010-2017: I am heartbroken by last week’s events, but remain in awe of each and every one of you. The work you do goes unheralded and unrecognized too often, but you are the backbone and do critical work each and every day. I am so appreciative of your work and your service. The Capitol and the surrounding office buildings are a sacred place, and I know you feel that too. We are all here for you.

Sending my love, gratitude and prayers to my former colleagues. Thank you!

Brandon Brown, 2000-2006: As a former Hill staffer please know that my family and I are praying for you and we will continue to pray for you and to keep everyone working at the Capitol in our prayers as we go through this tough time. Please take time to put yourself first and to take a mental break from the news and tv. God bless, Brandon Brown

Samantha Cyrulnik-Dercher, 2014-2018: Whether you are legislative staff, an intern, a food service worker, a custodian, or a mail carrier: you are the beating heart of our democracy. All of us stand with you during these horrible times. Please take care of yourselves and each other, and know that we will never forget your bravery and selflessness and public service in the face of unspeakable horrors. Stay safe, friends.

Brian Daniels, 1998 - 2008: There are thousands of Capitol Hill alumni who are in shock at the events of the last week and their impact on a place that we love. We know how important you, as staff, are to the proper functioning of our government, particularly now when it's needed most. Thank you for your service to the nation and for your daily courage in working on behalf of the American people.

Ava Yuen, 2014-2015: Some of my best friends were made during my fellowship. As a retired veteran, it pains me to see the hurt and fear all of you are undoubtedly feeling. You remain in my thoughts and we’ll get through this. Love and respect to each and every one of you.

Fabien Levy, 2011-2012: Thank you for getting up every day and doing the people's work. It may not be glorious sometimes and it may not pay you that much, but, without you, our democracy would crumble. Your continued bravery and fight gives us all inspiration. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Alec Rogers, 1995-2005: What you are doing matters. We all know that the Members cannot effectively serve their constituents and fulfill their constitutional responsibilities without a strong staff. For those of you facing abuse from the public, we've all been there and gotten through. There will be better days ahead. Thank you for your service.

Alan Roth, 1985-1997: While the country watched the Capitol building attacked, those of us who sat at your desks and walked the same halls watched a different kind of attack -- an attack on the people who comprise the Congress, and especially the often invisible staff who make the place run. We share your sadness, fear, and anger. Healing doesn't happen magically. It takes time and space. Give yourselves that.

Andrew Aragon, 2013-2016: The tragedy that you and your team endured firsthand must be difficult to fully comprehend right now, but know that there are people and resources to help you as you heal. You are not in this alone. You have gone above and beyond in your call to service. Thank you.

Carl Welliver, 2013-2017: We so appreciate all you do--and know how much time, energy and dedication it takes to do it. After last week's deeply upsetting and traumatic events at the Capitol--our second home and workplace that we so deeply love and cherish--know that we stand shoulder to shoulder with you, and will support you wholeheartedly in your work to find justice and peace.

Elliot Vice, 2009 - 2011: Thank you for your tireless work each day, no matter how difficult the circumstances you face. Those of us who love the institution recognize the important role each of you play in shaping not only pubic policy, but also a functioning work culture in Congress. In both good and challenging times, we support and appreciate your work more than you know. Keep your head up. Brighter days are ahead!

Andrew O'Neill, 2016-2020: Be kind to yourselves. The work is important, but it's only possible if you maintain a strong sense of humanity. We know the stress you're all under right now, and we've got your backs.

Kaity Wolfe, 2014-2019: The American people and I can’t say thank you enough for your dedication during this trying time. My heart was shattered on Jan. 6, and no one could’ve ever thought that what happened could be possible. Just know that you are sincerely in our thoughts and prayers. We WILL get through this!

Matthew Peterson, 0: As a staffer at the New Jersey Legislature, I want to express solidarity and support for my federal colleagues. We watched in horror at the violence that unfolded at the Capitol, but admired your strength and resolve to carry on the nation's business. We texted and shared stories about the brave staffers who retrieved the ballot boxes just before the rioters entered the chambers. Be well and THANK YOU for the work that you do!

Josh Miller, 2009, 2015: I’m thinking of and holding up MOCs and staffers of The Congressional Black Caucus, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus as well as all my friends of color who have to go onto the Hill campus today.

Pam Jackson, 1974-1987: I was a staff member to Majority Leader and 47th Speaker of the House, Thomas P . O'Neill, Jr., who taught us the honor of public service; all people are important; we can agree to disagree without being disagreeable. I am so proud of the bravery of Members, staff, Capitol police and all who work within that beautiful building. I salute you, honor you and stand with you. Thank you.

Aidan Levinson, 2020: Thank you for all you do for your country. Your work is of the utmost importance and does not go unnoticed!

Mieke Eoyang, 1994-1999, 2003-2010: I know this time must be so disheartening. I worked in the Capitol and know how much we depended on the Capitol police to protect us and what an honor it was to walk into that building. It’s hard to have that trust shattered. I know what it means to be a public servant -- whether you are responsible for the maintenance of the facility, ensuring the safety of those in the complex, or working in a member's office. Please know I am holding you in the light.

Steve Sothmann, 2010-2011: Chin up Hill staffers, we all appreciate what you do, even if the rest of the country doesn't understand your role (or how much you actually get paid...). You will forever talk about your time on the Hill regardless of where your career takes you in the future, so try to remember these moments as much as you can, even the during the difficult times.

Stay well, take care of each other, and ask for help.

And thank Capitol Hill Police Officers as much as possible.

While you are being vilified by a minority of misinformed people, the majority of the country is appalled by the attack on the Capitol and appreciate your service. Try to ignore the ignorant rhetoric and focus on why you choose to work in Congress -- to make the country better. Thank you!

Morgan Keese, 2012-2017: What you are experiencing is unprecedented and unlike anything you should ever be asked to endure in public service. You are all, regardless of party or affiliation, doing the work of your constituents regardless of what is happening around you and that is truly commendable. You are the best of us. Hang in there.

Shelley Stewart, 1988 - 1993: There aren't words to convey the horror the country underwent when insurrectionists laid siege to the Capitol last week. Not only were Members in harm's way, but so were all Hill staff who have dedicated their careers to serve our country. Kate Howard , 1994-1997: The oath we each took that "first day of work on the Hill" has never been more important or meant more. In the days, weeks & months to come, take good care of yourselves & each other. Do not hesitate to ask for support. You are not alone.

Shelly Stoneman, 1999-2000, 2003-2009: Thank you for your sustained public service during an unimaginably challenging time in our nation’s history. We see you. Thank you for serving our nation both on that fateful day but every day.

Emily Contillo, 2009 - 2012: Most people do not understand how integral the work you are doing is to the functioning of our government. But we do. I know how hard Hill staff work and none of you should be subject to this type of fear and attack. Thank you again for all you do and for keeping the country running.

Catherine Blue Holmes, 1999-2002: I served during 9/11 and Anthrax. I remember vividly the fear and uncertainty, yet, like you, I felt I had a duty to keep showing up for work. Remember that just showing up is an act of bravery. I salute you all, and I’ll keep you in my thoughts.

layth elhassani, 2003 - 2005, 2007 - 2012: It's a hard job full of sacrifice, with awesome chutes of gratification when you know you helped the country. But it's also one where you are safe at work. We battle passionately in this country but this has to be nonviolent. Your willingness to man your post is the stuff our democracy is made of. I'm humbled by your high form of citizenship. Thank you from this grateful community around you.

David Feinman, 2006 - 2010: Your selfless service to our nation has always been underappreciated by most, but know that those among us who have served with you, and many who still work with you from the outside, have a deep respect for you, your service, and your commitment to our Republic. We are thinking of you and stand with you during this most difficult time.

Catriona Macdonald, 1993-1999: I was working in the House when a gunman entered the Capitol and shot two Capitol Police Officers. We stand with you. Hang in there.

Robert Hurt, 1973-1995: The assault on the Capitol represents a greater challenge to our democracy and its institutions than 911. But in this case, the first responders are not firemen-- they are the elected officials of the House and Senate and their staffs. You have comported yourselves with strength and courage in the face of danger, and I salute you and keep you in my prayers.

Marni Karlin, 1994-1995, 2009-2012: To my family of Hill staffers - we see you, we grieve with you, and we send you strength as you stand on the front lines. My heart breaks for each of us, as well as the institutions we hold so dear, and what they stand for.

Iana Benjamin , 2011: Prayers lifted for you for love, light and peace.

Eric Olson, 1996-2003: Having served during 9/11 I can imagine the despair you must be feeling following last week's attacks on the Capitol. In many ways reconciling an attack on my workplace was easier given the threat was from afar, not within. Hang in there, hoping sanity and collaboration take hold, and thanks for holding it down for your MoC and all of their constituents.

Jennifer Taylor, 2008-2014: Whether on the hill or off, we are a community. A family. The Capitol complex is where we pour our hearts into our work, we make lifelong relationships, and where we have some of the most significant experiences of our personal and professional lives. This has been such a traumatic time, and such a violation on so many levels. We see you and we're with you, even when we can't be together. Stay safe, friends.

Channon Hanna, 2002 - 2008: I can't express my gratitude for all of you for your willingness to serve the public as a staffer. We see you and appreciate you.

Matt Smith, 2006-2012: Be strong. Know that no matter which side of the aisle you're on and how many idiots vilify you and attack your work, there are 10 times as many across the country who support what you do and the democratic process you represent. Thank you for everything you do!

Lisa Maher, 1981-1988: My heart is breaking for what you have experienced and what has happened to our government. While I served in a time of divided government, we never felt our lives were threatened. Thinking of you all and and thank you for your service in these times.

Jeremy Haile, 2008-2012: I watched with horror as the president incited violence against the Capitol and all who work there. As one who walked up and down those steps countless times, I was heartbroken and angered by the desecration of that space. Thank you for your service to our country, and for defending democracy. Here's hoping the worst is behind us, and we can get to work making the progress we so desperately need.

Kelly Frahm, 1998-2002: I look at pictures of the Hill covered in fencing and surrounded by soldiers and my heart breaks for each one of you. You work tirelessly and many times thanklessly to do the People's work. Know that there are thousands of staffers holding you in our thoughts, standing with you as you continue doing the hard work of governance. Thank you, sincerely, for your service.

Carla Lochiatto, 2000-2003: Thank you for all you do to keep democracy working. It's a tough job, but your dedication and determination is needed now more than ever. Lean on each other. Find the positive in the good work you are doing.

But all of us know and understand the special relationships that get built between members, staff, and the people you serve. We understand the late nights and grueling hours, and the sense of privilege to walk the halls each day. Please know that we are all holding you in the light. We appreciate you.

Mary Beth Spencer, 2013-2015: It could have been any of us. But it was you. I was thinking about everyone knowing you were not only scared, but for many of you, continuing to work in service of your constituents and your country. I am grateful for what you do everyday.

Valery Galasso, 2009-2013: It was Martin Luther King Jr. who said: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that.” You are our light. Leeann Walker Gibson, 2005-2017: My heart shattered as last Wednesday's events unfolded because I still know some of you, and even those I don't know personally - I know why you're there and I know your heart for our nation. Gregory Koger, 1995 - 1997: Thank you for the work you do every day. I am so sorry your service has been disrupted by COVID and threatened by insurrection. We appreciate the work you do and the lawmaking you will do in the 117th Congress.

Kenneth Levinson, 1991-1997: When I worked on Capitol Hill, it was with humility and awe that I looked upon the Capitol Dome and knew that I was entering those historic and hallowed halls each day to try and honorably serve the people of our nation. We admire your commitment to serving others, and work to improve the lot of ordinary Americans who rely on the dedicated people who work in Congress.

Artie Mandel, 2007-2017: Watching the footage on TV last week I felt like my own home was being robbed. To see these familiar spaces--where we've all taken meetings, gossiped, given tours and done the Peoples' business--become the site of such violence and hatred, was so sad. Katherine Cichy, 2009 - 2014: Thank you, thank you, thank you. Watching what unfolded last week was horrific, terrifying, and heartbreaking. I'm still reeling from the hatred and disrespect that was shown in the most sacred of halls. I can only imagine how traumatizing it must have been and continues to be. Thank you for continuing to show up and for continuing to do the important work. Please take care of and hold space for yourself. Sending love from California.

Aprille Raabe , 2005-2012: I cannot imagine the terror you must have felt that day. Thank you for coming back despite the fear for your own safety, to ensure our democracy carries on the work of the people. I'm proud to have worked alongside some of you during my tenure on the Hill. Thank you for your service.

Beth Osborne, 1997-1999, 2004-2009: Anyone who knows anything about Congress knows it only works because of your efforts and creativity. This has been a very hard year between COVID, the associated recession, election, and an armed insurrection. You always work hard, but even more so now — and under threat. Just know that many of us are aware of how hard you work, that you a life outside of work, and that we need you going forth.

Andy Fisher, 1983-1989, 1995-2013: Hang in there. Your service is worth it. I worked on the Hill through bombing of the Ohio Clock, east door shooting, anthrax attack, and ricin attack. None even close to your January 6. Here's to better days to come.

Stay strong, rely on each other, and reach out to us if we can be of assistance.

Tiffany Harris, 2019-2021: I only left the Hill at the beginning in January 2021 and never would have imagined this unspeakable tragedy happening. These racist zealots attacked an institution and the people who help it run. You, the staffers that keep offices going, listen to constituents, help draft the very legislation that make our lives better, and work long hours (for often low pay) didn’t deserve this. We will support you through this.

RAISA ORLEANS, 2010-2014: Thank you for the important work you do. The attack on the capitol was painful and scary for anyone who has ever walked through the Capitol and understands the sanctity of Congress, but obviously that pain was felt most acutely by those still serving. Your work is important and unfortunately often underappreciated. Please know that there are so many people out there who see and appreciate the good work of the unsung heroes of Congress.

Eric Parker, 2003, 2010-2015: Been doing my best to check in with my friends who still work on the Hill. Glad that this forum is a way to do that. As a former Hill, staffer, I can't imagine what you are all going through, but know that I am with you in spirit. You make the country tick. You're the ones who help your bosses' constituents. Thank you, and stay safe!

Cyndi Bauerly, 2002-2004, 2005-2007: So grateful for your dedicated service to our nation. We are with you as you serve the People without fear or favor. The insurrectionists don't understand how talented, dedicated and strong hill staff are and how you will never be intimidated or swayed from your service. Those of us who have also walked those halls and stood on the steps to the floor (but never in the well!) are with you in spirit!

Tiffany Atwell, 2000-2002: My heart broke last week as I saw the attack on the U.S. Capitol thinking of all of you working on behalf of US citizens without you even being prepared for such an assault. Please stay safe and I will continue to pray for your safety and your peace. Thanks for your courage and all you do.

Kia Kolderup-Lane, 2014-2016: I am in such awe of each of you and your strength to get back to work and keep the ship moving. You are each heroes in your own rite and for that I am grateful. No run of show or briefer could have prepared any of you for this but like a true staffer, you took control of the situation, righted the ship, and kept things going. Thank you.

I celebrate your courage and toughness to fight for the ideals that we all believe in.

Jane Campbell , 2009-2015: Thank you for your service to our country. No matter what your party or position Congressional staff work hard - crazy hours, bosses under pressure, too much work and not enough time. All that to make history- each of us honored to serve remember those days and the impact we made together. The attack on the Capitol was an attack on democracy. Thank you for protecting our precious republic.

Namrata Mujumdar, 2007-2009: Capitol Hill is a place where people like us/you go to make a difference and uphold the most precious values that make our country special. I hope you know we are all thinking of you and we are proud of the work you are doing to make our country even stronger.

Aaron Peterson, 2000-2002: Many of us left the Hill after 9/11/01. I hope many of you decide to stay. Millions benefit from your work. As will those you mentor after you leave. Some of you will run for office. Serve thoughtfully if you win. Don't grandstand, work. Turn off the phone, think. And know you're supported by those who've done work the houses, halls, and streets --The Hill. Thank you for your service.

To quote a popular Irish blessing: "When times are hard may hardness never turn your heart to stone. May you always remember when the shadows fall you do not walk alone." Stay strong and cherish the opportunity you have to serve the people. Thank you!

Michael Phelan, 2003-2019: Proud and humbled by the service of all who help ensure the light of democracy and that of our republic continues to shine from our Capitol. Peace and strength in your conviction.

Lauren Sarkesian, 2013-2014, 2017-2020: Thank you for all you are doing to defend our democracy. We know all too well the sacrifices you make. But now, that you do so the face of violent attacks, with pandemic-related risks, and under immense scrutiny -- downright inspiring. Your dedication to improving our country, and our reliance upon you, is not lost on us. We're thinking of you and are so grateful. Please take care.

Lelaine Bigelow, 2004 - 2008, 2009 - 2012: Thank you for your service. It doesn’t always feel like it, but this will be one of the best jobs of your life. It’s devastating that this happened, but remember you are making a difference in our democracy. We are here to support you and please reach out if you need to support. My thoughts are with you.

Daniel Stein, 2007-2010: You are all in my thoughts this week. We all will remember those who did this and make sure they are never welcomed into pleasant company. You have the power to use the constitution to expel those who supported these traitors and forbid them from public service. There is no peace without justice and without law there is chaos: use this Constitution to set us all free from their reign of terror.

Lisa Powell, 2007 - 2012: I can’t quite imagine the shock and terror of watching the catastrophic failure of the security that surrounds you every day. It breaks my heart that you had to go through that as you serve the public. Hang in there.

Zabrae Valentine, 1996 - 2001: Humans who choose to work on the Hill are true public servants - the best of the best. Thank you for your service. I'd just left Sen. Daschle's office to serve as a program officer for NDI in Malawi in 7/2001; my heart ached that our nation's best were targeted in the 9/11 attack just 2 months later. My heart is again with you now. We know what you do, and we appreciate you so much.

Elle Ross, 2014-2017: Stay strong. The world May seem bleak and gray, but the days will get better. You are the driving force behind our government, I believe in you, you can do it. And if anything a stiff marg at Tcoast will help.

Dana Acton, 2010-2021: Thank you for your strength, your bravery, and your commitment to this institution that we all hold dear.

Nichole Francis Reynolds, 2002-2004, 2007-2014: We stand with you and are praying for you! Your service on Capitol Hill and commitment to shaping public policy to help people, communities and our country will not be in vain.

Harrison Godfrey, 2007-2009: Thank you for you service. Cliche as that may be, it is true to the core. You work long hours with meager pay to keep the heart of our democracy beating. Some days, it feels like a losing battle (and sadly, occasionally, it is). But without your service, comprises would let be reached, bills would pass, and the organs of of democracy would cease to function. So, seriously, thank you!

Andy Taylor, 2010 - 2019: Working on the Hill is a professional and civil honor that too few Americans understand or appreciate. Your fellow alumni get it and we are so grateful for the work you do to ensure that the place where Americans come together functions.

Daniel Hervig, 2011-2018: Dear Colleagues: Even from hundreds of miles away, the attack on the Capitol was difficult to endure. The Hill not only a sacred place to democracy—it’s a second home for us. It’s where we lived our our dreams of serving the greater good, and where we made friends we cherish. I hope you take the time to personally recover from that trauma—and that your stay in the fight. Our long national nightmare is almost over.

Dani Gilbert, 2009 - 2013: Dearest Hill staff -- You are incredible. I am eternally proud of the work you do every day, and I'm heartbroken for what you went through on January 6. The violation of your safety is unforgivable. Those halls are holy and they are home; because of your thankless dedication, they will remain so. Sending each and every one of you all of my love and strength. We're here for you, now and always.

Becca Diller Ramati, 1996-1998: Please know we support you all! It’s a special job you have in a very special place. Hang in there!

Kathleen Strottman, 1998-2006: When I saw the images of our beloved Capitol under siege my immediate thought was of the staff and the many emotions the days events would bring to them. Anyone who has worked on the hill knows it’s one of the hardest most rewarding jobs you can ever have. Please know that I am one of the many who prays daily for your safety and success. Thank you for your service.

Ben Young, 2005-2007: I remember my lockdown and the moment I opened the door to the Capitol Police to sweep our office. My stomach still feels the flutters from that moment. It pales in comparison to the sounds and sights from last week. Thank you for your dedication to continue in the public service. Your duty is far more difficult than during my time, but you will make it so generations after you can serve.

Kimberly Bellows, 2008-2011: Thank you for all the work that you are doing, most of which is unseen by the American public. Know that we see you, that we're thinking about you, and that we appreciate your service to our nation, especially at this scary, often heartbreaking time. Hang in there.

Liz Hill, 2009-2020: You all are appreciated, more than ever, in these unprecedented times. Despite the uncertainty and trepidation, know that you are all essential to ensuring Congress continues to function. Jake McCook, 2009-2014: Just remember there are people who understand & appreciate your work even if you don't hear it everyday. I remember how awful it was to manage social media for my member. But those memories are drowned out by the many good experiences I had helping constituents. Focus on those positive moments to remind yourself why you took this job. And remember it's only temporary-you will come out on the other side lightyears ahead of others.

Ashley Musselman Wallace, 1997-2005: My heart goes out to you. You all work so hard because you’re dedicated to the legislative institution. I was on the Hill during the 1998 shooting, 9/11 and anthrax and remember how hard that was but I know you can get through this and come out the other side stronger than ever. Be kind to yourselves and to each other. Know that so many people appreciate your dedication and perseverance.

Jake Oster, 2008-2014: Thank you for playing an important role in our democracy and for showing up every day to support the constituents that rely on their government. The horrific events of January 6 were an attack felt by many, and experienced directly by all of you. We appreciate your service to the country. Thank you.

Kimberly Ross, 2000-2020: Dear Hill Staff and Personnel—thank you for your bravery and you selfless service in working to keep our democracy working. Amanda Arnold, 2006-2009: 15 years after arriving in Washington, I am still in awe of the Capitol. While working on the Hill for a truly awesome Senator I still sometimes wondered whether my work mattered. It did — and yours does, too. Keep up the good work.

Matthew Green, 1993 - 1998: You are the heroes who work tirelessly behind the scenes, with little pay and no recognition, to make our nation's legislative branch work. Thank you for all that you do! Always remember that there are thousands of us who recognize and appreciate your service, and who are thinking of you in these frightening times.

Linson Naval, 2005-2006: To our eternal colleagues, we see you. Your work is meaningful and matters. We are rooting for you all and care about you very much. We know it's hard and a unique burden but it's worth it. Thank you for all that you do.

JoDee Winterhof, 1991-1993, 1999-2003, 2013-2014: Greetings. So many of us who have also served and worked on the Hill are thinking of you at this most difficult time. You have lots of folks thinking about you and pulling for our country! Thanks for all you do.

Mara Sloan, 2008-2017: Your hard work is making our democracy stronger. Thank you for showing up for each other and supporting one another during these dark days. Know that you have an overflowing Capitol Hill family who believes in the importance of what you’re doing, and we’re sending love and light your way!

Jacquelyn Bennett, 1987-1992: I stand with you and your love of service to this country. The Capitol building and the work you perform on the Hill is honorable and will stay with you forever. You are in my thoughts and in my heart. We share a common purpose and love for this country. Stay well. Stay safe. Stay strong in your resolve. I stand with you.

Amy Schultz Berman, 2006 - 2013: I am thinking of all of you. Thank you for the work you put in to make Congress function so well. To my friends and Team Hoyer, you are in my thoughts everyday. On behalf of my high school students, who have heard your stories all week, thank you so much.

Joel Elliott, 2000-2003, 2005-2019: Your service to the public, especially during these trying times, is honorable. I know there are many days when it doesn’t feel that way, but we, meaning Americans, couldn’t all be part of this working experiment were it not for you.

N. Stuart Spencer , 1996-2003: Thank you for enduring the unspeakable-- you are very much in our thoughts now and in the uncertain days ahead.

Betsy Boyd, 1987 - 2000: Wishing you peace and comfort. As capable, dependable and strong as you are, PLEASE take time to take care of yourself even as you attend to so many duties or be okay with taking a break - work will always be here. As the airlines tell us, apply your own oxygen mask first so you can help others. Be well and take good care

Pam McKinney-Peckinpaugh, 1980-1994, 1998: The horror, disbelief grief I felt (and continue to feel) surrounding the attack on our Capitol was threaded with pride at the largely unreported and typically unnoticed heroism of so many Congressional staffers. Thank you. The work you do is vitally important to the protection of our Democracy, our Country and our way of life.

John Sawyer, 2002 - 2005: We are so grateful to each of you for summoning the will and the courage and the energy to go to work every day. Your roles are under-recognized, under-valued and under-thanked, and yet as vital as any in government. Especially now. Know that you have an enormous community behind you, and please turn to us for help any time you need it.

David Lachmann, 1989-2014: Having worked on the Hill during previous terrorist attacks, including the anthrax and 9/11 attacks, I appreciate and salute your service to our nation. Every patriotic American stands with you.

Julia Krahe, 2008-2011, 2013-2015: Living every day with the aftermath of the attack and still focusing your energy on what needs to happen to move our country forward can't be easy. But I know that you all are there because you believe in things bigger than yourself and want to help make the world just a little bit better. You are doing so every day. I hope you're able to feel the kindness and caring we're sending your way.

Dan Caprio, 1985-1987: I’m praying for you. Stay strong!

Kathryn Pearson, 1993-1998: Thank you for your critically important work! In June I gave a presentation to the House Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress about the importance of retaining expert congressional staff. Capitol Hill staff have long been under-appreciated and underpaid for their hard work, but I never would have imagined adding that in the course of doing their jobs, congressional staff put their lives in danger. I will continue to advocate for you!

Matthew Kravitz, 2007, 2009 - 2015: My heart goes out to you. Thinking of the horror of having your workplace overrun by a violent mob. Thank you for your work on behalf of the public. Hill staffers' work for our democracy is essential. It does not go unnoticed. You are not alone.

Jamie Fasteau, 2003-2007, 2010-2015: Thank you, thank you for all of your work. We are all thinking of you and sending you support in this most difficult time. We are so grateful for your service.

Michael Passante, 2009 - 2013: Thank you for what you do every day to ensure that the work of the American people gets done. Real patriots don't ransack offices - they clean them up as you have, and thereby ensure that our democracy and Constitution endure.

Tracy Schmaler, 2003-2007: Please know how much you are appreciated for your dedication to this country and the sacrifices you make every day to get the important job of democracy done. With the deepest gratitude and respect, thank you and please take care of yourselves ... better times ahead.

Tobin Williamson, 2008, 2015-18: Thank you all for being there! You're the ones who really keep DC running. We appreciate you so much and are cheering you on.

Tim Aiken, 1991-2014: Neither the attack on 9/11, anthrax laced letters, nor Tea Party harassment on the eve of ACA can compare to the assault on the U.S. Capitol by a seditious mob bent on disrupting our democracy and the legislative body’s ceremonial role officiating the peaceful transfer of executive power. Keep faith that all such attempts are doomed to failure and take pride that your continued presence and perseverance are critical to democracy’s survival.

We know how hard you toil, how little you are paid, how big-hearted you are, and how dedicated. I hope you find ways to seek peace and quiet, and be kind to yourself this next week. We're with you.

Kevin Albrecht, 2003-2010: Hang in there guys. You are part of a special club that very few people understand. The hours are long, the MOCs can be incredibly frustrating, and we know how awful the constituents can be. Yet we do it to make the world a better place

Kirtley Fisher, 2002-2012: My favorite Hill memories include the relationships and conversations I had across party line and with everyone in our buildings- police officers, cafeteria workers, nurses. It is truly a community, and will only be stronger after last week. Take care of yourselves and each other. We’re thinking of- and grateful for- you.

Aaron Jones , 2006-2014: To all the ones behind the boss, working long hours - thank you for your service to our republic! It's not a glamorous life, and there'll always be disagreements, but it is critical. Keep doing the great work - and take this opportunity to meet some staffers from the other side. Strike up friendships. It will not only serve you well when you leave the Hill, but it will make the institution and the nation stronger.

Debbie Marshall, 1994-2007: Hang in there! You are valued, you are appreciated and this dark time will pass.

Zack Marshall, 2008 - 2019: What you do is important, it's public service that is invaluable for the function of our democracy. While the vitriol that manifested in an appalling attack last week has been simmering for several years, I know that it won't keep you from doing your work. It can't. This is the time to muster the resolve to continue fulfilling your crucial duties. But you are not alone - the alumni community is by your side.

Mike Castellano, 2001-2011: Thank you for all you do and know that you have deep support off the Hill and around the country. America's democracy works because of YOUR work. The insurrection of January 6 and the desecration of the Capitol were despicable and shocking. But I was so proud that they did not in the end stop the People's business. You are performing a vital public service to the country, which is more important now than ever.

Teresa Acuña, 2013-2015: At a time when our politics seem broken and our democracy is under siege, there is a comfort knowing that there are people like you are defending the very values that make this country distinct. Thank you for your service. We have your back.

Erinn Lauterbach, 2010-2012: As I watched the events of January 6 unfold, my thoughts went immediately to you, the staffers and all who work on the Hill. Most people don’t understand what happens behind the scenes or the work you do, but we do. We empathize with your sadness, fear, and anger. As your Hill family, we see you and admire you for your strength and courage. Thank you for being the backbone of our democracy.

Jeff Blattner, 1987-1995: Thank you for what you do. Stay strong and positive. America in general and Congress in particular are more resilient than they may now appear. Better days are coming.

Sara Pease, 2000-2009: We're thinking of you & here for you. You're having one of the most amazing opportunities most in our country won't get to experience. Your work is more than a job, it's your passion, it's personal. As someone in the Senate on September 11, Anthrax, and lost my boss/hero in a plane crash, current events will impact you for years to come. Mourn, take care, & let it fuel you to do more good..

Michele Stanley, 2004 - 2013: Thank you for your service to our country. It takes strong and resilient people to work on the Hill so I know you can do this! Stand up and fight for yourselves just as much as you fight for your constituents. There will be a new dawn and we are here to support you in it. Be kind to yourselves and create the future you want, not what is written for you.

Robyn Lieberman, 1992-1998: The Presiding Officer's chair is the emblem of rule of law and transparency in lawmaking. Seeing violent, casual marauders occupy it, without respect, is unfathomable. You work on the Hill because you want to make progress, and your strength and competence now is going to be your life's work. Thank you, and rely on each other.

Aaron Deas, 1997-2000: These are tough times, but the work you do is vital. Rebuilding after this mess requires good people to be vigilante. Thank you and stay safe!

Billy Easley, 2013-2016: The work you do as a congressional staffer is meaningful and critical to our nation. It's easy to focus on the work as a way to move on from what happened last week. But remember to take care of yourself and give yourself the space to emotionally recover from this terrible chapter. I'll be praying for all of you, the Capitol police, and our nation.

Sarah Dash, 2008-2012: My heart goes out to each and every Hill staffer following this horrific assault on our shared workplace and our democracy. Michael Fulton, 2007-2017: Thank you for your public service during these tumultuous times. You’re underpaid and undervalued but please know that your work makes a difference back in the community. Everyone that has walked those halls felt the impact of January 6. We stand with you. Keep the faith in democracy and continue to work towards America’s promise.

Catherine Murray, 2008 - 2014: I can only imagine how challenging it must be to keep going after this. Be gentle on yourselves and take things a day (or hour) at a time. We're all so deeply grateful for your continued service and dedication to our country.

Adrienne Christian, 2007-2016: Thank you all, for the work you do to protect and sustain our democracy. No one should have to experience a terrorist act at work. I will pray for your comfort and peace.

Melissa Rosenthal, 1993-1996: I've been thinking of all of you for the past 4 years and even more the past week. I'm so sorry you're having to experience such a hostile unsafe environment even as you dedicate yourself to essential public service. I can't tell you how much I empathize and appreciate you.

Dan Mirvish, 1989-1991: Thank you for your service to our democracy. My heart goes out to all of you. When I worked on the Hill, our biggest threat was elevated cholesterol from all the free receptions and the annual Ice Cream Social (thank you, milk lobby). No matter where your career takes you, be proud of your days on the Hill, remember the good times and stay in touch with your friends and colleagues.

Ben Miller, 2003-2020: Congressional staff are not thanked enough -- let alone paid enough -- for all of the important and challenging and tiring work that you do every day on behalf of your member, their constituents, and the country. That's always been the case, and it's especially true now. Please be safe, take care of yourself and each other, and know that all of us Hill alumni are thinking of you.

Caitlin Hart, 2012-2018: These are some scary times, but you will get through them. Hope everyone that commutes to and from the Capitol complex can slowly recover from the damage done, both physically and mentally. Slowly but surely, we can all move forward together. We

Ellen Whitt, 1985-1995, 2006: As I watched the events of January 6th unfold, I had such a sinking feeling in my heart. The feeling was one of grave concern for those of you in harm's way and for the awe-inspiring place that is the Capitol. Kevin Mulvey, 1980-1984: From my time as a lowly intern to later a hill liaison for ITA and USTR, I always felt working in and wandering the captial complex was a special privilege. The Vice President's office, the Ways and Means hearing room, the Congressional Reading Room in the LOC, all so breathtaking and majestic. My heart goes out to all who were tramatized by these crimes against our country. Let us hope respect and decorum return soon..

Jack Rayburn, 2009-2010: Nothing but respect, appreciation, and love for all of you who remain steadfast and stalwart in your commitment to public service. Rosie Krueger, 2008 - 2012: The moment you realize that you are not as safe at work as you thought you were is traumatic. Whether you were in the building on 1/6 or not, you are likely experiencing that trauma. Be kind to yourself, and don't be ashamed or too busy to get counseling. It is important to take care of yourself now, so that you can keep on working to take care of everyone else in our country. <3

Sharon Levin, 1994 - 1996, 2001 - 2002: Thank you for the work that you do on behalf of all of us every day. You may be feeling lots of things, experiencing disruptions, or even wanting to withdrawal from everything. Perfectly normal, but they cannot become permanent. So, take care of yourselves first and foremost, while many of us are just a call or message away. Remember, the combined efforts of Congress creates our nation’s progress.

Just know that there are a lot of us out there that know how important your work is to our democracy and are appreciative that you are persevering during these crazy times.

Maria Meier, 1990-91; 1999-2005; 2011-2017: Thank you for the important work you do. We, the former staffers, are here to support you as you move through the difficult time.

WENDY WASSERMAN, 1989, 1991-1993: It is an honor to walk across the Capitol grounds, through the Rotunda, and in any of the adjoining office buildings. Even though that honor was violated last week, don't let them take it away from you. You are honorable. Always.

Allison Bernstein, 2009 – 2011: Thank you for showing up every day—throughout the last four years, the last ten months, and especially the last week. Even as things are terrifying and depressing and whatever else by turns, I sleep better knowing we can count on smart, dedicated, passionate public servants like you to keep our country going through the worst as well as the best of times.

Gina Gribow, 2008-2010: Honestly, one of the first things I thought of when I heard about the riots at the Capitol was the safety and well-being of the staffers. I can only imagine what you must have went through and the lasting impact it will undoubtedly have. Thank you for all that you do! Sending lots of light and positive vibes your way.

Jill Bucceri, 2000-2002: I was there during 9-11 and anthrax. I understand how scary it can be! What you’re doing is so important! Stay alert & stay safe!

Caryn Alagno, 2002 - 2005: YOU are the patriots. Not those who have no reverence for the work you do, the building you do it in, or the democratic principles of the country you do it for.

Francis Creighton, 1994-1999, 2001-2003, 2009-2014: Look, coming to Washington to work in Congress is a dream come true for many of us. But the last few years have been tough. I’ll just say that the work is worth it - it matters in ways that you see and don’t see. The leg work, casework, outreach, comms - it all makes the work of our Constitution real. And you are living it. In good time’s and bad - what you do matters. Thank you.

sharon courtney, 1989-1996: I can't even imagine what the last week has been for you all. I just want you to know that we appreciate the work you do for our country and we're thinking of all of you!

Andrew Kauders, 1999 - 2006: Thank you for your tireless service, the early mornings and late nights to make sure our "democratic experiment" survives and, in fact, prospers for future generations to enjoy. We owe you big time and are so grateful for your service during these challenging times.

Bruce Lesley, 1990-1991, 1993-1997, 1999-2006: You are protecting our democracy and know that we stand behind you and are there to support you.

Stephanie Venegas, 2007-2011; 2013-2015: It can feel like a thankless job a lot of the time but you get up every day for a larger purpose but then to have your safety and security threatened at the hands of those very people you serve is unspeakable. Thank you for putting your lives on the line each day to make this world a better place. Our hearts are with you.

Haley Nicholson, 2009-2013: Thinking of all of you, and know we care about you more than words could express. Remember it’s okay to not be okay and we are always here for you.

Angie Montes Truesdale, 2000-2001, 2002-2005: Thank you for your service and courage. The work you do is tireless and essential to our nation. Please know that there are so many of us who understand your contributions and are sending wishes for strength and healing.

Tom Garwin, 1990-1994: Hang in there -- but only if you are doing everything you can to counter the disinformation and lies that have been rampant in our politics and that led to the January 6 disaster. Republicans as well as Democrats need to work together to get back to the situation before Newt Gingrich began deliberately poisoning the discourse for political advantage. If you won't stand up to bullies, or if you are one, you should leave.

Melanie Fontes Rainer, 2013-2017: Thank you for serving and being there every day to make sure the government works.

Amanda Renteria, 2005-2013: The first ones in, the last ones out = staff. Thank you. I see you and ♥️ ya.

Sophie Milam, 2001-2004: I worked in the Senate on 9/11 and during the anthrax attacks. Walking the halls of Congress you felt the history and the responsibility of the work on behalf of our country. Those assaults, like the recent insurrection, only underscore the importance of the work you’re doing. Thank you for your public service from a grateful alum!

Izzy Klein, 1996-2009: I was on the Hill during the 9-11 terrorist attack, but what happened last week is a hundred times more terrifying. I’m grateful to you for your Hill service and hope that you and your colleagues stay safe and continue the hard work that must be done. Please call on us anytime. And thank you again for all you do for your boss and our country.

Sinead Doherty, 2013-2016: Thank you so much for every single thing you do to keep our country moving. Sending you strength, stamina, and eternal gratitude always.

Gus Zimmerman, 2010 - 2013: I remember the Saturday afternoon ten years ago when we all observed a terrible attack on a Congresswoman, her staff, and constituents in Tucson. Last Wednesday's events sent me right back to that deep dark place and the terrible fear that followed in all of us. You are in my thoughts daily.

Allison Parker-Lagoo, 2011-2013: On a good day, being a hill staffer is exhausting - then there's what you're going through now. For some it's easier to just focus on work while others are preoccupied with emotions. No matter how you're responding, it's okay and I hope you are kind to yourself for the coming weeks ahead. Our hearts are with you - please reach out if you need help.

Joshua Lamel, 2002-2018: Hang in there!

Marie Howard, 1974, 1980-1981, 1983-2010: My heart breaks to see the violence and hatred damaging those Hill buildings that I love so much. It was such an honor to work on the Hill for 30 years. I send my respect and best wishes to you during this difficult time. You are working for the good of all of us and we former staffers support your efforts.

Bridget Hagan, 1998-2001: Thank you so much for everything you do every day. We are all so grateful.

Heidi CUSICK-DICKERSON, 2004-2014: Hey to all you heroes... thanks for being there and doing the peoples' work. I was a field rep for Cong. Mike Thompson and Jared Huffman--a big shout out to you in their offices now. It was my honor to attend two inaugurations and make a few other trips from California to the Hill. What a privilege and honor to be in the Capitol. Stay strong. We need you.

Judith Glassgold, 2010-2013: Thank you for your bravery and service. Words seem inadequate to describe what you coped with that awful day. You survived one of the darkest days in our country’s history. Thank you for your loyalty and dedication to ensure that the essential task of keeping the country on track brings honor to us all.

We're all part of a Hill staff family and are all sending you love and care and gratitude.

Stephen Krupin, 2007 - 2011: You are not alone. We know what you go through and give up on the good days, and you have our gratitude. On the worst days, none more painful than January 6, know that you were in our hearts and have been every minute since. Keep showing up. Keep serving. Keep doing honorable work. Keep making us better.

Trudy Vincent, 1986-2012: You will get through this -- lean on each other and take care of each other. Congressional staff are made of strong stuff. You'll get through this.

Robert Mann, 1985-2004: Thinking of each of you during these tough times. I cannot imagine the stress, fear, and uncertainty you and your loved ones feel. Thank you for your patriotic service to our country. You and your work are appreciated so much.

Jack Ebeler, 1981-83; 2009-2010: Literally can't imagine what you've been going through since Wednesday, and I'm so grateful to know that you and the members will not waver from your service. But please stay safe - and take time if you need it to deal with this (um, I guess I just approved some administrative leave if needed - you can show this to your supervisor). But mostly, thank you. Jack

Stefanie Austin, 2012 - 2014: Thank you for the amazing work you are doing in the midst of these scary times. None of us sign up to work on the Hill for the glory or the money — we sign up because we believe in supporting democracy, helping people, and making a difference. Thank you for continuing to do that, thank you for showing up, and thank you for protecting the rest of us. We support you and appreciate you!

Caitie Whelan, 2009-2015: Stay strong! You are making our country more kind, more just, more awesome. Take care of yourself, take care of each other!

Liz Tankersley, 24: There is no greater calling than working on the Hill. Whatever defeats and disappointments, every day is a new opportunity to serve the people. What greater good is there in life? I am proud of all of you, and I consider that we are all part of a 'family' who know what it means to serve our country. Know that we who came before you are thinking of you now, with respect and love.

Kathleen Moazed, 18: Well, I thought of you as soon as the footage of the invaders started rolling. I knew all the attention would be on the Members, but I was thinking about you hiding under tables, running for safety. It's often a thankless and hidden job, but WE know how vital you are to the functioning of our democracy. Thank you all so very much!!

Brian Chiglinsky, 2007: I wasn’t really a staffer - just an intern for a couple of summers. But the staffers I worked with inspired me to pursue a career in public service, and I’ll never forget them. As challenging as the days have been, I hope you can take the long view and think about the interns and staff around you whose careers and lives you’ll change for the better. Even if you don’t know it right now.

Jennifer LaTourette, 1995-2003: To all who walk these halls: please know there is an entire community of us who walked them before you, heartbroken by what has happened to this place we revere and to you, the people who give it life today. What you have endured and continue to face is unthinkable and my heart aches for all of you. Please add my name to those who stand ready to support you, our Capitol Hill family.

Stephanie Phillips, 2012-2016: The work you do every day to improve lives and keep our government functioning was already an incredible service, that even before last week was often not easy. But last week, you were asked to go through something much too difficult in the name of that service. Our hearts are with you, and the fact that you continue moving forward and serving our democracy during this time is truly heroic. Thank you for your courage.

Mark de la Iglesia, 2003 - 2009: I see you. We see you. We know this has been terrifying and traumatic for you, in a way that's different in kind and magnitude than for the rest of the country. Thank you for continuing to serve our country in these difficult times. We wish you peace.

Jo-Anne Basile, 1983 - 1989: "Democracy is necessary to peace and to undermining the forces of terrorism." Thank you for doing your part to keeping this a free democratic country. May we move to peace as a nation and have this opportunity last a lifetime for you.

May strength and grace be with you, especially during these difficult times.

Katharine Corbett Kuhn, 2005-2009: " Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed it is the only thing that ever has." You are that group! Advocate for you as you continue to advocate for us 🇺🇸

David Prestwood, 2005-2013: Overworked and underpaid and (hopefully) loving it. Hang in there. You’re doing the people’s business, and the people appreciate it (even if they don’t know it). Thank you for your service, and one request - if your boss wants to do the wrong thing, including saying something you know not to be true, push them. Break the echo chamber of the member office. You’ll be glad you did.

Brian Branton, 1998 - 2014: You are all public servants working for the greater good of our country. The hours are long. The pay sucks. But it is the best job in the world, and I love all of you for the work you are doing. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Please know you are loved and appreciated.

Be strong, support one another, and know that the tens of thousands of Hill alumni are with you in spirit and support you.

Kate Bateman, 2002 - 2005: Dear staffers, You aren't alone in your pain. You're a critical part of this grand experiment, which only works if it lives in the minds of our citizens. *Thank you* for believing in it, for your tireless efforts to give life to our democracy! Katie Tilley, 2007-2010: I struggle to imagine what it will/has been like for you to walk through the doors to your office building, saying hello to the USCP officers who you usually greet every day you walk through, but now knowing the real meaning of "they'll take a bullet." You deserve, like everyone, to feel safe walking into your workplace. Your long hours are appreciated/acknowledged, not to mention your bravery for your continued work for the people.

Bentley Johnson, 2015-2017: We will get through this together. Justice, democracy, national security, respect, and kindness will prevail. The People’s business gets done because Hill staff are caring, dedicated and talented. Now you have to be courageous, too. I can’t imagine how much harder it must be after the trauma of last week and the continuing trauma of the Capitol needing to be under armed guards. Thank you for your continuing service to our country.

Jake Spano, 2007-2010: Right or left, I never met anyone who went to work for an elected official to get rich or famous. Just to try and help make the world a bit better. You don’t deserve what’s happening, none of us do, but I thank you for your long nights, missed birthdays, and cancelled trips to TRY to make this thing called democracy work. Peace!

Julie Kashen, 1996-1998, 2001-2005: I wrote a note already, but have been thinking more about my post 9/11 experience on the Hill. The work is important. It is urgent. But also it will be there. The arc of the work is long even if every day is crucial. So, while the expectation may be work work work, please create boundaries and space to take care of yourselves. YOU are most important. Your service matters ,but so does your health!

Alex Hackbarth, 2009-2013: Hang in there! I served in Afghanistan for two years and know how hard it is to work when you’re worried about security. But the work you do every day helps to make this country a better version of itself. We need people like you fighting the good fight. Know that your work is important and we thank you!

Jennifer McCloskey, 2008-2015: Thank you. Your dedication and hard work are more important than ever. Every day that you show up for your constituents, you are showing up for our collective future. Keep up the hard work and know you are revered by so many. We appreciate you. Now more than ever.

Ben Nathanson, 2009-2014: Incredibly grateful to you for your courage and dedication to our democracy. Thank you!

Ann Witt, 2002-2009: Being a staff member in the House was frequently stressful. But nothing I encountered compares to the situation you all endured on the 6th, and my heart goes out to you. One current staff member I know compared her feelings about it to those following 9/11. As the truth of what happened on the 6th becomes clearer, I can easily imagine that. I wish you the strength to keep fighting for democracy.

Sarah Shive , 2009-2011, 2013-2017: So many of us who are former staff are sharing your pain and lifting you up. I am so sorry that you are facing these added burdens at an already tough time, but please hang in there! You have a lot of support, and you have all of our appreciation.

Ian Koski, 2010-2015: You are not just an aide to your boss. You are your own person and your life is just as important. Your service is just as valuable. I'm sorry for what you're going through — it is preposterous and repugnant. THANK YOU for your service!

Eric Mitchell, 1998-2005: Thank you for all that you do behind the scenes to ensure that the values of our country remains protected.

You must continue to fight for your constituents and what is right for our country. The long hours of work that you do is vitally important to our country, although many do not know it. Every last former staffer is behind you and sending you strength to persevere.

Priscila Abraham, 2014-2016: Remain hopeful! You are making a difference in this messy, vibrant democracy of ours. Thank you for your service and continue to fight the good fight!

Jennifer Storipan, 2001-2004, 2013-2017: Thank you! The work you are doing under extremely difficult circumstances is extraordinary! Please do not hesitate to seek help if you need it. There is great power and relief in talking through events like these, and there is no shame in seeking help! You are powerful and strong and most importantly, you are loved! Thank you again for all you do - we appreciate you!

Jill Jolicoeur, 5: Witnessing this event shook me to the core and I can only imagine the impact it has had upon you. I see you. I appreciate you. I'm with you. I support you. I THANK YOU!

Sean Brooks, 2012: I can't even imagine the anger, fear, and exhaustion you must feel. When people talk about public service, they rarely think about the risks of serving in a nation with a history of such rage against government. But in this moment, your service is needed more than ever. Please take care of yourselves, and know we are all thinking of you. Thank you for your bravery and patriotism.

Steven Collens, 1993 - 1999: For those of you who work for members who voted to overturn the election, my advice is to resign and save your reputation. For everyone else, hang in there! The Hill is such a stressful place in normal times. I can’t imagine what it’s like to work in today’s conditions, and can’t fathom what it must have been like on Jan 6. Thank you for your service and commitment to our government and our country.

Elliot Gillerman, 2009-2010: Thank you. For taking the difficult phone calls, working long hours, and most recently, putting yourselves at personal risk to keep our democracy safe. We appreciate you and all that you do each and every day.

Know that your dedication, strength & hard work does not go unnoticed. Sending you all so much love & gratitude!! .

Paul C. Light, 1987-1989: I was on the Hill when Reagan was in office, the Iran-Contra scandal, the Savings and Loan crisis was burning through the economy, we were in mourning after the Shuttle Challenger accident, and the world was moving toward the confrontation that collapsed the Soviet Union. Our system is resilient, but can only take so much. It is up to all of us to push hard toward recovery. Be Strong.

Kay King, 1987-1990: As horrific as it was to watch the attack on the Capitol last week, I was proud to see Hill staff acting with bravery and smarts, putting country before self. Thank you for your service and please continue your critical work. Most important, may you stay safe and healthy.

Mark Vieth, 14: I served in Congress during 9/11. It was one of the most terrifying days of my life. Please know that you have a large support community that cares deeply about you, and we thank you for your tremendous service.

Hollis Gurley, 2012-2018: Sending Texas size hugs and prayers - thank you for all you've done and continue to do!!

Tom Readmond, 2000-2003: I worked in the Senate on 9/11 and during the anthrax attacks, but nearly twenty years on what I remember best is the feeling of "I can't believe I get to work here," that never diminished. Every day you come to work you're a part of history, and I am rooting hard for you.

Alejandra Villarreal Weiss, 2008-2012: The act of showing up and doing your job right now is an act of courage in itself. The culmination of acts of courage both large and small, from people like you who are fighting the good fight, is what will get us through this moment and set us on a path forward. Thank you for showing up for the country; we need you.

I was honored to serve, and worked hard, but never had to put my life on the line the way you have. Thank you.

Kristin Isabelli, 2009-2013: You are all in our thoughts and prayers. As hill staff, you know what it means to be resilient, and get work done. That's what you'll continue to do despite last weeks unprecedented horror. You are all stronger than the weak, and cowardly actions of last week's attack. You're not alone. Former hill staff from all across the country stand with you during this difficult time. Thank you for everything you do. Stay safe.

We The People continue to rely on you and your colleagues without regard to partisan divisions. I wish you every blessing.

Mariann Dempsey, 1983-2003: All of you were, and are, in my prayers during the insurrection. I knew security would get the electeds to safety but worried that each of you were not a priority and could be in harm’s way. I pray you continue to be safe.

Bobby Clark, 2003-2010: Bobby Kennedy once said, "What other reason do we have really for our existence as human beings unless we've made some other contribution to somebody else to improve their own lives?" Know that your work and your contributions matter and that we're grateful for each day you show to work on behalf of every American.

Sean Snyder, 2010 - 2017: Thank you for all you’re doing to put country above self and to serve as the true beating heart of our government. Sara McGovern, 2010 - 2014, 2019: Our history was written in the halls of the Capitol. Ideas have become laws that have changed lives in that building, and without staffers like you, none of it would be possible. Thank you for all the work you do. We stand with you.

Ben Taylor, 2005-2008: You all help ensure our Republic functions. Stay safe and know we are thinking about you and your families. Keep up the hard, underappreciated, long, vital, rewarding, satisfying (on occasion), and vital work. We’re counting on you.

Alex Glass, 2001-2011: I'm so sorry for what you are experiencing. As a long time Hill staffer, I couldn't believe my eyes while watching the events at the Capitol last week. You have lots of fans pulling for you all around the country.

Patrice Willoughby, 2000-2010: To our beloved Hill Staff - Congressional staff are the heartbeat of the Legislative Branch, tasked with extraordinary work on behalf of the American people. Events like January 6 violate the hallowed space in which this work takes place. Regardless of Party you all understand pluribus unum has never been more true that in this moment.

Megan Howard, 2010-2011: I am so sorry for the fear, sadness, and anger you must have felt watching, and experiencing, our Capitol be attacked. Thank you for continuing to serve your districts and the country, and for upholding the oath of office. Your hard work will ensure our democracy endures.

STEPHEN LASSITER, 2009-2014: Hey y'all. Former Sen. Hagan and Rep. Ellison alum here. Been thinking a lot about you. Follow the Speaker's example on Jan. 6 by quickly returning to the business of democracy, and don't let the worst of our country keep you from striving to fulfill the promise of our country. This is a hard time for everyone, but we're relying on you and appreciate all your work and sacrifice. We will get through this!

Nilmini Rubin, 2003-2011, 2013-2016: Thank you for your continued service to our country! Your dedication to our democracy is so appreciated.

Katrina Lassiter, 2008-2012: You are overworked and underpaid, but you are doing one of the greatest jobs in this country. In 2010, as we tried to pass healthcare reform, we experienced what we thought was the worst it could get. Angry citizens banging down our doors and sticking knives through our mail slot. But you all have persevered now through years of far worse, culminating in the once unimaginable. Take care of yourself and each other.

Stephen Miller, 1979-1994: My heart broke as I watched the violent incursion into the sacred space of the Capitol. I thought a great deal about the staff going through this. You do important work and do not deserve to be put through such a traumatic experience. Thank you for your service.

Jennifer Guinness, 2001-2008: While the attack on the Capitol was surreal for all Americans, it was especially heartbreaking for those of us who have walked those halls, stood in awe in the rotunda, respect its history and symbolism - and still have friends there. Katie Schubert, 2003-2008: You’re doing important work to serve this great nation. Stay safe, focused, and doing the right thing. We saw lockdowns and evacuations, and my best advice as you realize that these jobs may unfortunately require sacrifice, is to keep a pair of running shoes under your desk, a little precaution I still use today (used them several times, not for “true emergencies”). Your dedication, heart, and service are so appreciated and important, and we’re here

Christina Flores, 2010-2012, 2016-2017: Hold the line. You are all doing an incredible job. Because of you, we will be a better country

Annie Georges, 1983-2011 : Hey, amazing staffers, I remember walking through those smashed doors, doing the peoples' business, too many times to count. Please don't lose hope. Please continue to serve the public because no matter how many times we walked through those Capitol doors, we walked with other dedicated public servants, whose respect for the institution remained intact. We were doing thankless work at times, but important work. I am saddened by our loss January 6. Thank you!

Erin Allweiss, 2006-2010: I remember my first time walking the halls of Congress, and I still remember the feeling. It took my breath away, and I cannot imagine anyone doing what they did to this hallowed institution. I was in the Paris attack, and I still remember hearing the gunfire. I have no doubt the trauma remains, so lean on one another. Seek professionals if you need it. Keep up the good work, because good shall overcome evil.

Patrick Morris, 2004-2007: In these challenging days, please remember that so many of your fellow citizens are proud of you and grateful for your vital work.

Diana Maas, 2010-2015: Thank you for doing the unimaginable behind the scenes while the nation watches the trauma unfold. Your service is crucial and your work is appreciated. “If people see the Capitol going on, it is a sign we intend the Union shall go on.” Thank you!

Joshua Meadows, 2018-2020: It isn’t said enough to staffers on the hill, so thank you. Not only in light of recent events, but for oftentimes putting your lives on hold to serve your country and doing so at such low wages. The things you do keep this country moving, no matter how small they may seem. Thank you for your continued service and know that the family of Capitol Hill Alumni are behind you no matter what.

Colette Phifer-Williamson, 2001-2010: As a former staffer I've worked at the same building and offices and personally I want to thank you for your sacrifice...you the staff are the back bones that hold the seams together... you are appreciated. Your bravery will not go unnoticed. I’ve experienced 9/11 and the anthrax attack, and we prevailed now we fight a contagious disease Covid-19 and your commitment to continue to serve, displays courageousness and heroism.

Lliam Morrison, 2012-2014: Thank you for everything you do to protect the most democratic institution of our nation. Congress is a special place that wouldn’t exist without the overworked and underpaid Hill staff. Thank you!

Jeremy Wilson-Simerman, 2006-2008, 2012-2014: Thank you for your service. Many of you work for demanding bosses and chiefs during trying times even before the attack. Please do what you can to take care of your mental health. This will be one of the most consequential jobs you will have undertaken in your life. Please take advantage of the Senate Employee Assistance Program or House Office of Employee Assistance. You are doing important work for our democracy and our country. When we work for an elected official it is easy to get consumed by our boss’ needs. But do not forget to do what is best for you, your health, and your country.

Jane Calderwood, 1983-2004, 2012-2013, 2014: You have a large support system of those of us who have been there. We love and support you. Sometimes talking to someone who has been there helps, and I speak from experience (Gulf War, 9/11, anthrax). The attack was an attack on ALL of us and my heart broke as I watched the mob desecrate the halls I know so well. We share a very special bond and we are here for you.
